Our God is “Mighty to save!” That song brings us hope for life eternal. But to many of us, that’s all we thing God can do. He can save us for the afterlife, but can he make a difference in the “right now” life. Can our lives, our relationships, our future, the outcomes of our efforts... can all of this be different? Is God Mighty enough to change the course of a life? Or are we all just stuck here waiting to die? Good news friend, the Bible says - "Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17

This question challenges us even if we are physically healthy. Our hearts, relationships, and lives so often are a mess. But Jesus can heal those issues in us and through us. We just have to decide, “do we want it bad enough to follow Him?”

So often we look at the world around us and think, “What can I do?” Famine, war, homelessness, poverty... these things and more scream at us for action, but we see the problems as too big for us to even make a dent in. Furthermore, we look at the issues we have in our own lives and think they are to big also... divorce, sickness, joblessness, debt, failure. These issues and others cause is to give up and say, “what can I do?” The truth is God has called us to be world changers. We are called to be salt and light - two small things that have huge impacts on large things they come in contact with. We are called to do the same, change what we come in contact with by mixing with it and making it more like God. So HOW do we do this?

There is a two-tiered error into which our youth-obsessed culture has fallen concerning the elderly, and Up! illuminates this folly. The first is the myth that old age equals no useful purpose. The second is our irrational fear of death and how it affects the way we navigate the latter days of our lives. As Patricia Jung points this out in her book, Growing Old in Christ, “Why do we persist in stereotyping the elderly as ‘over the hill’? Partly this is a con-sequence of not being able to imagine that such aging has any purpose.” Is there meaningful life after 70? Up! emphatically says “Yes.” What does the Bible tell us about our purpose in life, and does that purpose ever end, slow down, or get less important? Let’s take a look and see.

All I need is love? REALLY??? No, but pretty close! More songs have been written, movies made, books penned, poems created, relationships started (and ended) on the subject of love than any other idea in history. The human race is fascinated with replicating the emotion of love. We buy fragrances, eat chocolate, and even change our body shape, all for the prospect of Love. “What a man desires above all else, is unfailing love.” Proverbs 19:22
When you think about it, our whole lives are spent in pursuit of love.

Nowhere Man

There are a ton of voices out there calling for our attention. Everyone on the planet has an opinion, all you have to do is google the word “blog” and see how many results you get. (2,890,000,000 in 0.18 seconds as of last week) In the book of Jude, we’re going to look at how others sometimes try to lead us where they want us to go, and not necessarily where God wants us to go. Everyone of us has felt at one time or another like the “Nowhere Man” in the song. It’s ok it is you today, God has a plan to get you out of the funk you’re in and back on track.

Today we celebrate Moms. Those wonderful people who lead, guide, discipline, inspire, coach, and pray for us. Sometimes they make us laugh, sometimes they frustrate us, sometimes they just help us get over a hurt. Regardless of what we think of the impact our Moms have had on us, they WILL leave a legacy in our lives. In fact, we all will leave a legacy behind. Whether we like it or not. The only decision we get to make in the matter is... What KIND of legacy are we going to leave? Will it be one of blessing, or one of cursing. Will those who come behind us find us faithful, or lacking?

Today I don't want to waste any time. We have before us two questions: Easter, and the resurrection. What does it mean and why does it matter? There are a lot of things you could have done this morning rather than come sit in a multi-purpose room, drink great coffee, and listen to my bad jokes. This weekend over 2.1 billion people will celebrate easter all around the world. How is it something could happen 2000 odd years ago, and still cause traffic jams today? What does it mean?
A lot of people say, "I believe in the resurrection. I just don't understand it." George Gallup did a pole that said that even 84% of the people who never go to church, believe that Jesus rose from the dead. It's a historical fact. It wasn't done in secret. The whole city of Jerusalem knew about it and eventually the whole Roman Empire. If CNN had been there, they would have had it live. There are at least 15 historical references to Jesus meeting people, touching people, talking with people. One time He cooked breakfast for some people. Another time He talked to about 500 people after He had risen from the dead. A lot of people saw Him. It was big news.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" A Dangerous Association

Associating with Jesus should be a dangerous thing. We’ve lost sight of the fact that Jesus said that to follow him we needed to leave everything and everyone we know. Wow... that’s a really big statement. Many have taken that verse to mean we must physically leave our families and friends to be a Christ Follower, and if we’re called to witness for him elsewhere we should. It also means we need to become people who are Kingdom Thinkers and not “this world” thinkers. If today is the day. If today you want to join with me and commit to live the whole of next year Dangerously Close to God. You must consider these three decisions.

A Dangerous Investment

Stewardship is the first and foremost spiritual discipline every Christian must come to grips with if they ever hope to live dangerously close to God. As I’ve said many times, Stewardship is the first evidence of a heart that is completely surrendered to God.
Millions of Christians go through life thinking that Stewardship is about money, that the church or pastor wants their money, or even that God doesn’t trust them with their own money.
The simple fact is, Stewardship - the discipline of trusting God with the resources He has provided you - is simply coming to terms with the fact that it’s not all about you. If we are going to be a people that live dangerously close to God, we are going to have to come to terms with the fact that God desires our complete devotion in every area of our lives.

Early on in our journey God is doing amazing things and we’re blown away with his power and ability to work on our behalf. But usually, something happens and we transition God from an all powerful Deity, to being a tame and harmless spirit.

Passing Up Payback

First Sunday At Newhart

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to write you all and thank you for praying and working so hard to make our first Sunday in our new location such a success.
The worship was great, the auditorium looked wonderful. And the bbq afterward was a ton of fun.

When The Bottom Drops Out

Some of us have good reasons to be bitter – we’ve experienced setbacks with a personal sting, and setbacks with a face. The first are the kind of setback we cause, the second are the kind that someone causes to happen to us.
